What is Golfing with the Stars?
Come join fellow Hamlin parents at the first adult event of the year! This day-to-evening event offers something for everyone. Play or volunteer at parent-sponsored and themed holes on the course, enjoy refreshments and fun games on the terrace, and/or dine and dance the night away at our star-studded evening afterparty! Each option promises ample time to reconnect with friends, meet new Hamlin families, and indulge in tasty food and libations – culminating in a fantastic dance party!
What if I’m not a golfer?
Don’t let that stop you! This event is fun for pros and amateurs alike, and is all about supporting Hamlin and having fun together as a parent community. Even if you are a first time golfer, this is the perfect opportunity to gather some friends and give it a try. This year we are excited to offer a 9-hole option for those teams who prefer not to a commit to a full day of 18 holes…an even better opportunity to try your hand at a new sport! We have several other fun new additions to this year's event in the works - stay tuned!
Not interested in playing golf? No problem – there are plenty of other opportunities to attend and participate:
- NEW this year! Play games, enjoy afternoon refreshments, and enter our putting contest at "Drinks on the Links." Free to attend!
- Join other parents from your class on the course as you compete for most spirited themed hole! We have three 2-hour volunteer shifts in order to accommodate as many different parents and schedules as possible: 12:00 - 2:00 p.m., 2:00 - 4:00 p.m., and 4:00 - 6:00 p.m. We invite you to volunteer for one or more shifts. Look for information on signing up in the coming months.
- Join fellow Hamlin parents for dinner, drinks, and dancing at our evening party!
- Make an underwriting gift to support our girls and Hamlin!
How does scoring for the golf tournament work?
We will follow the same general tournament rules in 2018 as in prior years. This includes following the scramble format, with the requirement that each team leverage a tee shot from each player at least once during the course of play. We will also have a “longest drive”, “closest to the hole”, and a “hole in one” contest as in years past.
However, in response to requests to follow standard mixed skill tournament rules, we have added handicaps to the calculation of final scores. We ask that you include your handicap when buying tickets, but we can also accept them the day of the tournament as well. If you do not have a handicap, we will default to the maximum of 18 strokes. If you are curious as to how a team’s handicap is incorporated into final scoring, please reference the following link: http://www.leaderboard.com/scramcap.htm.
With this addition, we hope to create access for more competitors and provide an opportunity for teams of mixed ability to compete for the highly coveted golden jackets!
I’d like to volunteer but I need to pick my daughter up from school in the afternoon. How can I make it work?
Not to worry! Hub (our after school program) will be FREE for all volunteers on the day of the event and is available until 6:00 p.m.
Is this a fundraiser?
Yes, the Golf Tournament and evening party are fundraising events not to be missed! Combined, they are one of only two fundraising events the Hamlin Parents Association puts on each year. Your participation contributes much needed financial support to the Parents Association's annual gift to Hamlin. Last year, the Parents Association raised $720,000 through this and other initiatives thanks to the generosity of the Hamlin community!
What is underwriting?
At Hamlin we love hosting community-building events throughout the year: not only do they bring the Hamlin community closer together, but they are also a critical part of our fundraising efforts that help support the school’s operating expenses. Underwriting supports the Parents Association in our efforts to raise crucial funds for financial aid, faculty enrichment, and innovative programs at Hamlin. And don’t forget that many employers will match any charitable contributions made by their employees – and it can be an easy way to double (or even triple or more) your gift to Hamlin! Those who utilize matching gifts will be recognized at the level of their total giving.
Are there any other fundraising aspects of the event?
In addition to underwriting and ticket sales for the event, Golfing with the Stars will feature a Raise the Paddle effort during the evening dinner portion of the program. Raise the Paddle is a fun, fast-paced, auction-style round that raises funds for a specific, targeted need at Hamlin. This year we will be raising our paddles in support of a new social emotional learning program that will be added into Hamlin’s curriculum during the 2018-19 school year! Event attendees are invited to “raise their paddle” at whatever amount is most meaningful to them.
Sounds fun! When and where is it, and how can I attend?
Golfing with the Stars will take place on Friday, September 28, 2018 at the Presidio Golf Course. Tee times and the terrace party begin at noon at the Clubhouse (box lunches will be served at 11:30 a.m.), then you’re invited to return to the Clubhouse to continue the fun at our evening party at 6:30 p.m.
Ticket sales go live on Tuesday, August 21! You will be able to purchase individual tickets for golf or the dinner party, or a combined ticket for both.
What should I wear to the evening event?
This is your chance to channel your inner superstar! Dress as your favorite Dancing with the Stars contestant, or show up as a glamorous red carpet celebrity. Don’t worry about overdoing it – the Hamlin community loves to go all out! For those on the course during the day and/or those who prefer not to dress up, please feel free to come as you are.
How can I get involved?
Contact this year's event Chairs, Jennie Palmer (jenniefridholm@yahoo.com) and Mike Palmer (michaelpalmer@me.com), or Lauren Thornhill (thornhill@hamlin.org) to learn about the many ways you can get involved. We can’t wait to see you there!
